Before you start

Is your roof ready for solar?

Panels stay on a roof for decades. These are the things we check first, so you don’t pay to take them off again later.

Cracked or slipped tiles

Anything loose or broken is fixed before panels go over it. Afterwards it’s much harder to reach.

Tired felt and battens

On an older roof the layers under the tiles may be near the end. We check before fixing anything to them.

Leadwork and flashings

Leaks around chimneys and walls are easier and cheaper to fix before a solar array is in the way.

Which way it faces

South-facing roofs with little shade suit panels best, but east and west-facing roofs can work well too.

Your options

In-roof or on-roof?

Two ways to fit panels. Each card says what it’s best for.

Solar panels fitted into a clay tile roof

In-roof panels

Best for: New roofs and re-roofs, and anyone who wants the panels to sit flush.

The panels take the place of the tiles in that area and sit level with the roof, in a tray system that keeps it watertight.

What you get

What’s included in a solar install

The roof side of a solar job is where most problems start, and it’s the part we know best.

  • The roof checked first, with any repairs priced before anything is fitted
  • Scaffolding put up safely
  • Brackets fixed into the rafters, not just hooked on the tiles
  • In-roof trays and flashings fitted to keep water out
  • Tiles cut and refitted neatly around the panels
  • Electrical connection by an MCS-registered electrician
  • The roof checked and the site cleared before we leave

Don’t fit panels on a tired roof

If the roof needs work later, the panels have to come off first, and that adds cost. If your roof is near the end of its life, it can make sense to re-roof and fit in-roof panels at the same time.

Qualifying new roof systems come with a guarantee of up to 25 years on workmanship and materials, depending on the system. The exact length and terms for your job are written into your quote before you agree to anything. Roofing work

“The work to be carried out was agreed in advance and my personal preferences were entertained even though they weren't the easiest options. When the work started, it was carried out very efficiently by a good-natured team that were very respectful and polite. The quality of the work was very good and I am very pleased with the results. When I questionned anything, I was given good answers and responses.”

FAQs

Common solar panel questions

The electrical connection, inverter and commissioning are done by an MCS-registered electrician District Roofing works with. We look after the roof, the mounting and the panels.

Yes. If the roof needs repairs after the panels are fitted, they have to come off first. We check the tiles, felt, battens and flashings at the survey and tell you if anything needs doing.

In-roof panels sit flush and suit a new roof or a re-roof. On-roof panels sit on rails above the tiles and suit an existing roof in good condition. We recommend one at the survey.

Often, yes, if the roof is sound. If it is near the end of its life we will tell you, because replacing it later means taking the panels off first.
